Let Your Purpose Revolve Around Him

Emily was practicing cursive letter K this morning.  After I taught her how to write letter K and had her practice, I gave her the day's assignment of practicing letter K.  And, then, off I went to change the laundry.  And, in two minutes, I came back to see her progress.  She wasn't writing letter K, but letter L (which she has not learned yet.)

And, it made me smile.  She is a lot like her mama.  And, everyone else for that matter.  Our fallen nature resists our given assignment.  And, we long for a different, seemingly better assignment.

My assignment during this season is to be a wife, mother, homemaker.  But, then enter blog world and facebook, and so very quickly I become discontent with my lot in life.  And, my role seems very, very small and insignificant.  Not to mention very messy and mundane.

Yesterday, our pastor (who is currently preaching through the book of Luke) spoke from Luke 1, Mary's song.  He mentioned something I had never considered before, and took great comfort from.  Mary's lineage is never recorded in Scripture.  Most of the notable main characters of the Bible have their lineage written out.  Even Joseph's lineage is mentioned.  But, not Mary.  She lived very obscurely.  Yet, she was known by God.

My pastor continued to explain the passage and he mentioned the Westminster's Confession of Faith's chief end of man...that to glorify and enjoy Him forever.  He mentioned that obscure Mary did just that.  She said, "My soul exalts (glorifies) the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced (enjoyed) in God my Savior."  What made nobody-Mary great was that she worshipped and served a great God thus fulfilling her purpose as a woman made in His image.  And, so my pastor encouraged us to follow Mary's example and let our purpose revolve around Him.

No matter how small and insignificant and ordinary and mundane...by glorifying and enjoying God wherever He places us is just what He wants us to do.  And, when we go wandering and not worshipping, we will surely only end up empty.  But, when we turn fully to Him in the midst of whatever messy stuff He has planned for us, and see Him in it, our hearts will be full and we too will sing, "My soul exalts the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.  For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave."
